About me

Hi I’m Emily, I am an advanced photographer with over 8 years of professional experience in the world of media and design. My love of photography began at the age of seven. I find it amazing to snap a photograph where in a split second I can capture something the human eye cannot see alone. I am not limited to what I enjoy photographing. My photographic portfolio consists of astrophotography, still life, wildlife, macro, landscape and portraiture.

My other interests are the sciences, philosophy and all the arts. I write blogs and enjoy researching health and wellness, I created a blog to share what I learn from books and other research to exercise my interest in wellness and human biology. I love animals and support the welfare of them, I create good relationships with them. Just like humans, a good relationship is reliant on a fair level of trust and respect.

Professional experience

I ventured into design before I was 10, when I found a love for the Adobe Suite. I spent hours giving myself projects like creating mocks of a teen magazine with InDesign, editing my photos with photoshop and even making custom msn emojis on Adobe Flash. By the time I was old enough to work I was straight into designing published projects. When I had work experience in secondary school I worked on a hair and beauty magazine and I had a double page spread published in that months issue. I still have the pages in my physical portfolio!

After that, I started designing websites and creating print adverts (before social media properly came along). As tech changed so did my role, eventually I ended up as a senior designer in a leading brand in the insurance industry for hair and beauty. I built up social media followings organically, created videos, content and graphic designs across all platforms, designed the website and got the chance to really get in to videography later on in the role.

On a side note, I used to have a YouTube channel in my teens with my best friends, we would vlog and do things like visiting a cemetery on Halloween or making up songs or comedy. I would edit the footage so this gave me experience in video editing at a young age, it was a seamless transition for me to move into videography after being a designer for so many years. I never stopped using a camera in the time I was a Designer, my camera would often be around my neck when I was out and about! Even more so now as cameras are getting smaller – thank goodness!

Present day

Fast forward to the present, I have been in multiple areas of production. Music videos, professional interviews and personal projects. In recent years I have broadened the subjects I photograph, I used to stick to wildlife photography but now I have experimented with much more from street, macro to portraiture. Last year (2023) I started my own freelance business, EMK Photography. I wanted to run my own business for a long time, so after leaving my design role I took all the experience and knowledge I had gained over the years which gave me a worthy toolbox to get started on my own! I like to share peoples stories, weather they are a business owner or a creative. It’s great to capture and help them present their journey to others. It can inspire and educate people, I think that’s a wonderful thing. It’s good for multiple reasons to share these things when everything is so accessible on the web nowadays. It may help boost your business, present your projects with class or simply to entertain others!
